What is the difference between hand-building and wheel throwing?

Hand-building pottery projects will yield a cup, mug, platter, or wall hanging first time, every time. Soft clay slabs are formed and decorated into the desired shape using hand-building pottery techniques such as slab, coil, molding and sculpture.  Our Play in the Clay participants love working with fun and talented art teacher Trish Stultz.

Throwing on the potter's wheel, as with any art form, may be harder than it looks, but it is not impossible. Throwing will require you to get a little muddy in your quest for cylindrical perfection. Award-winning potters Rosalie Outlaw and Jason Outlaw offer private lessons on the potter’s wheel for those who are unable to take one of our 10-week classes. The teacher will demonstrate the basic steps of centering and pulling up a wall into a cup or bowl. Then they will assist you as you try to duplicate those steps.

Play in the Clay 2 Hour Sessions and Private Lessons

Outlaw Pottery offers something for everyone from ages 7 to 107. If weekly classes don’t fit your schedule or you are in the area on vacation, try one of our afternoon sessions.  We offer two-hour Play in the Clay hand-building pottery sessions and Private Lessons for wheel-throwing pottery. Outlaw Pottery will glaze and fire your piece for later pickup or shipping.

PRIVATE LESSONS

Hourly Wheel-throwing Pottery Private Lessons

We offer adult wheel-throwing pottery classes in 10-week sessions.  However, if those dates/times do not meet your schedule, we also offer private lessons.  If you are visiting the Space Coast from out of town, can’t make our regularly scheduled classes, want a private clay date with your honey,  are looking for a unique parent/child class, want a dedicated one-on-one teacher/student experience, or are too young to take our adult session, then you might want to consider a private lesson.

Ages 12 and up.

  -  (Like driving a car, wheel-throwing requires a certain amount of strength, physical size and motor skills.)

$50.00 per hour/per person

  1. Includes: 1 hour of hands-on wheel-throwing instruction with award-winning professional potter Rosalie or Jason Outlaw.  Private lesson includes up to 3 lbs of clay (most people use 2 to 3 lbs), use of tools, bisque kiln firing, glaze and glaze firing. (Additional Clay: $3 per pound of clay for larger, advanced projects down the road.)

  2. Visiting the Space Coast? Create your own memories of your time here in the sun. We will trim and fire your pieces, then glaze them with the glazes you have picked. We will re-fire your piece, and ship them to your home address. We can ship your pots for a $20 shipping and handling fee.

Pottery takes 4 to 5 weeks to dry, be bisque fired in our kiln, be glazed and then be glaze fired in our kiln.  Are you from out of town?  We can ship your pots.  Souvenirs, made by you, will arrive within 5 to 6 weeks at your home!

PLEASE NOTE:  There is no way to learn how to throw pots in only one hour. It takes 10 weeks just to learn the basics of how to wheel-throw pottery, and then our weekly wheel throwing students take classes for years and years.  Like learning to play golf or the guitar, your first one-hour lesson simply gives you a taste of what you need to learn from repeated lessons.  All of our students complete at least one piece of pottery (cylinder or bowl) during their first one-hour lesson.  If you are less interested in learning a long-term complex process and more interested in just having fun, then we recommend our Play in the Clay 2 Hour hand-building pottery sessions.

  1. Are you looking for something new, fun, artsy and educational to do on your own, with the family or with a group of friends?

  1. Staying in the beautiful Space Coast area on vacation and want to experience the local art scene?

  1. Looking for a a different activity for Girls Day Out, Fun Date, Art Vacation or Day Trip, or Family Outing?

WHAT CAN YOU MAKE?  Your  professional pottery teacher will help you select a project that fits your skill level and the confines of the science of clay.  Keep in mind that it takes decades of experience to be able to make certain types of clay sculptures you may have seen on Pinterest or in magazines.  Your project will be determined by your skill level, what can be created in a two-hour time slot, your group’s dynamics, and what is realistic within the confines of the science of creating and firing real stoneware pottery.  Come with an open mind ready to learn and have fun as you Get Down & Dirty with Outlaw Pottery.
