Winter Hand-Building Pottery Sessions for Adults

(a.k.a., The Snowbird Sessions)

You don’t have to be a snowbird to take these classes.  Everyone is welcome!

We designed this session and its schedule with our snowbird students in mind.

What is the difference between hand-building and wheel throwing pottery?

Hand-building pottery projects will yield a cup, mug, platter, or wall hanging first time, every time. Soft clay slabs are formed and decorated into the desired shape using hand-building pottery techniques such as slab, coil, molding and sculpture.  We do not use a pottery wheel for this type of pottery. Instead, the more relaxing style of hand-building pottery techniques takes place while sitting at tables.  Wheel-throwing is done on pottery wheels, which requires a bit of strength and a lot of patience and concentration.  Wheel-throwing is a challenge and takes 10 weeks just to learn the basics. If you are interested in our 10 week wheel-throwing class, click here to learn more.

  5. FIRING SCHEDULE: Depending on the projects, your last 2 or 3 classes will be spent glazing your pottery.  After you glaze your bisque fired projects are glazed, it will take 2 to 3 weeks to have them glaze fired.  Most pottery can be picked up 2 to 3 weeks after your last class.  If you have to leave to go back north sooner, speak to your teacher to make special arrangements to pay for shipping.

  6. MISSED CLASSES:  Because of the schedule of this special session, there are no opportunities to make up a missed class at a different time.  However, if you have to miss a class, it is not the end of the world.  You can pick right back up the next week with that week’s project, just like missing a yoga class.
